Goals can be in a number of states:

• A standalone goal
• A parent goal
• A sub goal

Think of it like this - a parent goal might be something at the company or department level that is pretty big, wide reaching and runs for multiple quarters. It might have other goals that support it and are smaller but still big enough to be goals, hence sub-goals. Now we can easily see how things relate and what depends on what to bring clarity to dependencies and delivery.

Of course, goals can be standalone and run for a period of time with supporting projects that are the execution of the goal.
